Condensation can cause damage to windows if left unresolved and in some cases, become a health risk when dampness and mould form as a result. Though there are plenty of ways to manage the amount of watery residue that appears around your property, an expert has warned that it could be a sign of a deeper problem.  In a video posted on his TikTok account, "That Property Guy" shared how to tell the difference between everyday condensation, and "failed double glazing".

The TikTok user explained that condensation occurs on the outside of the window and can be easily rubbed off.

He said: "You'll get condensation when there is moisture in the air. 

"It can cause damp so it's best to open a window, or get a moisture catcher."

If the watery residue is caused by a broken window fitting, the condensation is out of reach.

The property expert explained: "With failed double glazing, the moisture is between the window panes. And it's a sign that the double glazing has failed.

"You will start to lose heat through the windows, so it is best to get them repaired or replaced."

This occurs when the window seal breaks, allowing cold air to enter your home, and warm air to escape. He added that internal moisture is "not a good sign" and "can be expensive to rectify".

According to MyJobQuote, the cost of resealing double-glazed windows and doors usually falls somewhere between £25-£70 per unit.

If the glass unit is "blown", the entire window will need to be replaced.

An expert at CostShed UK said: "If you want to get a blown window replaced, expect to pay about £60 up to £350.

"This cost varies on whether you need the glazed unit to be repaired or the entire window replaced. The dimensions of the panels you want to replace also affect the cost incurred."

They explained that the average cost is around £57.78 for a 200mm x 400mm window pane, and £155.15 for a 900mm x 1200mm pane.

Aside from a broken window seal, condensation between window panes can occur for several reasons.

In kitchens and bathrooms, where there is a lot of moisture and humidity, condensation is also inevitable on colder surfaces.

Fortunately, this is easy to fix by improving air circulation in your home. Opening windows and internal doors allows a flow of fresh air to reduce humidity and clear moisture.

Extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms should always be used to reduce humidity when cooking or showering.

When it comes to using your tumble dryer, make sure the vent pipe is placed out of the window and avoid drying wet laundry indoors.

Keeping your property at a constant temperature will reduce the number of cold surfaces and make it harder for condensation to form.

You will need to make your home reasonably warm for this to work, so it is a good time to invest in draught excluders in order to maximise heat retention.
